In 1967 the author was invited to give the Cadbury Lectures in Theology at the University of Birmingham. He then felt compelled to rewrite the original series of eight lectures which now make up the chapters of this title. This new edition contains a new Foreward by Rev Canon Timothy Yates, who retired as Canon Emeritus of Derby Cathedral in 2000.
