Born in Tokyo, Chiura Obata (1885 1975) moved to San Francisco in 1902 and supported himself as an illustrator. He loved to wander California, painting landscapes; in one summerlong mountain sojourn he produced more than one hundred works. Obata joined the art faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1932. Interned during World War II, he was afterwards reinstated at Berkeley and retired as professor emeritus in 1955. The woodblock prints reproduced here mostly scenes of Yosemite National Park in California are from Obata s World Landscape Series, cut between 1928 and 1930.
