Forests of Symbols: World, Text & Self in Malcolm Lowry's Fiction

This study looks at Lowry's work, examining the ways in which acts of reading, writing and interpretation define his characters, and also at how they threaten those characters' sense of a coherent identity. The Consul in "Under the Volcano" is seen to embody Lowry's own anxiety.
