Author Pat Kramer considers totem poles "North America's most unique contribution to the world of aboriginal art." In ALASKA'S TOTEM POLES, she provides a guide to the history of totem poles and their carvers, the legends behind them, how to "read" them, customs and ceremonies, fact and fiction on totem poles, famous totem poles, and where to see them. PAT KRAMER is an accomplished writer and photographer. She has worked with Native people in educational capacities for almost twenty years. She has participated in ceremonies, heard their stories, and received permission to repeat them. Her area of expertise is Northwest Coast Native cultures. Kramer's most-coveted award is a ceremonial Eagle Feather presented to her by the Native Indian Trade Association in thanks for the positive impact her books have brought to Western Canada's Native communities.
