Product Description:
In 1889 the U.S. Steamer Thetis left the port of San Francisco and cruised the coast of Alaska. This epic journey was launched to rescue shipwrecked sailors and to assert U.S. sovereignty over the newly acquired territory. The result was some of the earliest photographs of Alaska ever made. The Thetis encountered Native peoples and Russian settlers, and had unbelievable adventures navigating through ice floes without getting trapped. This exciting collection of photographs is accompanied by a rich description by Robert Gordon Butler, who was aboard the Thetis for this unforgettable journey.
