Introduction from the Author

Before you continue on with this guidebook, there is one thing you need to know about Santa Clara—it is a small school. The size of the school affects everything about it, in both positive and negative ways. On the plus side, it greatly benefits students academically. It also results in a close-knit and friendly student community. The flip-side, however, is that the University has a very low national profile. I had never heard of it before my high school counselor suggested that I apply. Its teams are not on ESPN (or ESPN2, or FSN) very often. It will probably never be listed in Playboy’s Top Party Schools, and if that is what you want from a school, SCU is not for you. You should still buy the book, though; I could use the royalties.

Santa Clara is a unique school (“unique” sounds better than “unusual”). It’s a small Jesuit university in the south Bay Area. It lacks some things that people usually associate with colleges. For example, over the last few years, I’ve gotten used to having this conversation—

Well-Meaning Acquaintance: “So where are you going to school again?”
Me: “Santa Clara University.”
