Introduction from the Author

I transferred to Stony Brook University for my junior year of college. Until that point, it had never occurred to me that Stony Brook was an option for me. However, it was at Stony Brook that I earned my first “A,” which was a feeling of accomplishment like no other. I had finally found my niche. I never realized how much a college should have to offer its students, how many opportunities should be available.

Some might say that Stony Brook is just another public school on Long Island, just a small step above community college, but they are wrong. SBU was a whole world of enlightenment for me. It helped me to understand what things I was interested in, where my strong points were, what direction to go, and how to get there. Because Stony Brook is such a young school, its reputation is, perhaps, not as well known as some Ivy League schools, but it certainly has the same credentials. Many don’t realize how many ways Stony Brook has affected the every day lives of people. Things like the bar code and the MRI were invented here. People come to Stony Brook to get a true world-class education. It is with a feeling of pride that I tell people where I go to school, knowing that I am in the company of the leaders of industry and knowledge.

The diversity of students and range of majors, combined with the amount of clubs, organizations, and community leadership make Stony Brook one of the most versatile up-and-coming universities today. Even just looking at how the campus has improved over the last five years is a testimony to the many ways Stony Brook University continues to grow from a small remote school located in the middle of farmland, to a flagship of the State University of New York (SUNY) System. With the erection of new buildings, renovations of older ones, and the integration of state-of-the art equipment, it is quite evident that SBU is heading for a place amongst the best schools around. All this, and the affordability, combines for the best value in education available.

Students don’t always come to Stony Brook because it was their first choice, but they generally leave with the notion that there isn’t any other school that could offer quite as much out of education and life. The scope of this book is to explore all these many facets that Stony Brook has to offer, both good and bad, in a way that is factual, unbiased, and with all the human aspects of experience. Hopefully, with the breadth and perspicacity of the information provided here, one can see a real discriminating glimpse into the University life at Stony Brook.
