If you major in political science, like me, or take some of the courses as general education requirements, you’ll learn all about different types of identity. Civic identity is one way people identify themselves and define who they are relative to their surroundings. When you come to the University of Connecticut (UConn) you’re part of a community, which is probably why so many students who didn’t initially plan on attending report that they are very happy they did. It’s a civic identity of sorts that transcends ages and interests and unites the students of a school out in the middle of the woods. UConn is a city in the middle of nowhere—kind of like Las Vegas, but with more lights on at night.

The truest thing I’ve ever heard said of college is that “college is what you make of it.” If that applies to most schools, it applies proportionately to the University of Connecticut’s increased size. From classes to sports and clubs to social events, UConn does it and does it big. Big East basketball dominates the late winter and early spring, while the improving football program augments the fall’s social scene.

If you decide to enroll at UConn, you’ll be overwhelmed by the school’s largest asset—opportunity. There are opportunities of all kinds: in research and academics, social life, sports, and in all the other things you’ll read about in this book. UConn is a school on its way up, and, with an increasing amount of applicants, it is quickly sharpening a competitive edge and gaining the respect of being one of the nation’s top public universities.
