Introduction from the Author

When I was a little girl, every time someone asked me where I wanted to go to school when I was older, I d stand up proud and tall, stick out my chest authoritatively, and announce, I want to go to Notre Dame. I didn t say that because I m a legacy, or because I had seen the movie Rudy (which I didn t actually see until I was a freshman at ND). I m not really sure when or how I first heard the words Notre Dame, but they always sat quietly in the recess of my mind.

The first time I visited Notre Dame, I knew why I wanted to go to school there. Driving up Notre Dame Avenue, I saw the Golden Dome, shimmering in the afternoon light. I saw the Basilica s bell tower, colored with history, standing erect and overlooking the campus with a caring eye. During that weekend visit, I witnessed, first-hand, the academic excellence and family atmosphere that are part of the Notre Dame tradition.

Established in 1842, French monk Father Edward Sorin, founded Notre Dame on the principles of Catholic faith and perseverance. Through the years, Notre Dame has carved a reputation of academic excellence. With 763 full-time faculty members, a student/teacher ratio of 12 to 1, seven schools, including the graduate school and law school, and approximately 38 majors, Notre Dame is slowly building a liberal arts tradition rivaling that of some Ivy League universities. Boasting a combined total of 24 varsity teams, 48 club and intramural sports teams, and over 300 student organizations, Notre Dame strives to mold excellence outside the classroom as well.

If you are already considering Notre Dame as one of your college choices, you ve probably heard all of this before, and right now, you re probably wondering whether or not it s all true. Well, here s your chance to find out the truth, straight from the mouths of the students. Welcome to the newest edition of the College Prowler Guidebook on the University of Notre Dame. I sincerely hope that this book sheds light on the reasons why I and so many other students chose to go to Notre Dame, and I hope it aids you in your search for the college that s right for you.
