Language Games and Centers

One of the best ways young students learn is through play. This book contains 17 games that make practicing letters, colors, shapes, and language skills exciting for young students.

The games are organized around six themes -- crayons, frogs, puppies, mittens, peanuts. There are three to five games plus center suggestions for each theme. Skills are repeated in the various themes to develop learning mastery. Skills practiced: color recognition, color words, shape recognition, letter recognition, letter sounds, categorization, descriptive & comparative language (positional words, size words, etc.), rhyming, statements and questions, and visual memory.

Here is a description of two of the games:

"The Ice Cream Cone Game" (rhyming words) -- You get four pages of patterns for cones and scoops of ice cream. Cones have pictures on them (pig, bee, boat, fan, men, car); scoops have pictures that rhyme with pictures on cones. Object is to build rhyming ice cream cones. You also get a page of blank cones and a page of blank scoops so that you can create your own game variations.

"Let's Go Fishing" (letters, colors, shapes) -- You get nine pages of fish patterns with upper/lower case letters and basic shapes on them. Directions tell you how to make a fishing pole with a magnet attached. Students "fish" and name the letter of shape "caught." Variations are given for beginning & advanced play and for color recognition.

Complete step-by-step directions for how to make and how to play. Games are simple and inexpensive to make, using common classroom materials; a few extras needed -- magnets, tongue depressors, milk cartons, etc.. Variations are suggested to accommodate different learning levels. All the patterns you need for the game parts are included. Fun, instructive illustrations throughout.
