Supervising New Professionals in Student Affairs: A Guide for Practioners

This text has been developed for use by preparation program faculty and functional area site supervisors who have the responsibility for directing internships and practicums in higher education settings. Successful practice demands that professionals understand students' background characteristics and their modes of learning coupled with knowledge of higher education environments and principles of organizational effectiveness. This handbook will lay out a conceptual framework for supervised experiences. It explains the rationale behind supervised practice, and addresses design, supervision, and legal and ethical components that are relevant to both faculty (teaching the supervised practice courses) and supervisors (overseeing the students on-site).
